~ Overview ~The difference between Saul and his reign. He was chosen for what he did in the pursuit of Israels enemies. The people were excited to have a king that would destroy the enemies that went against them. David on the other hand was chosen by God for his heart. David went on to beat the enemies of Israel too, but he was not chosen by the people but by God. There is a big difference in the two kings. ~ The Responsibility for Anointing Is God's ~When the people decided they needed a king and came to Samuel to demand that he appoint a king over their lives he was saddened. They were choosing to not have God to rule them, but a human man to choose the best for them. 1 Samuel 8:5 and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” Samuel grieved because their demand came from their hardened hearts and was desired by them as men. Yet, God allowed them to have a king. They chose Saul and with their choice came problems. David we find was the divine choice and an amazing selection for king. Samuel was afraid to go for fear of Saul's wrath and yet he chose to obey and go to find the king that God would appoint for them. 1 Samuel 16:1-3 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.” 2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” But the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.” The difference was Saul was allowed to be king, but David was chosen by God to be king. ~ The Requirements for Anointing Are God's ~We see that first when Samuel came to anoint one of Jesse's sons that he had the thought of a man of great stature before him like Saul. 1 Samuel 16:6 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!” God showed Samuel the differences in how He chooses people to do great things and how man chooses for people to do great things. Even the great things are different too. The Lord sees us totally different than man sees. He sees the heart and judges us by our heart and not what we look like. 1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” When Samuel started out he thought of the first born of Jesse, but God said no, and He said no to all of the sons that Jesse brought forth to Samuel. They are not the choice that God has for His king. God does not go by our resume but by our heart. We are not saying that the outward things on a resume are unimportant. There are other things that are important as well and give people more value. But it is not the end all be all of the person. There are three things that are important in choosing the way that God does. We will start the three things tomorrow. ~ Question ~1. When someone describes your life, are you known as a person with God's heart? Thank you for sharing our study with us today. We are excited to be back into the study and have missed sharing with you while we were gone. There just was no time to actually post what God was teaching us.

~ David Was Great Because of the Confession of His Life ~ Today David would be judged and the focus would be the sins that he committed and what he did wrong not what he did right. Life is good at sharing what you did wrong and not the things that you have accomplished in your life. God did not gloss over the failures that David had when He shared his life in 1 Kings 15. But God balanced it out talking about the fact that David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, He always turned around and went back to God. We really must share that David was a human being, and look at what he accomplished. David did what God commanded for him. When God shared about the failures of David, he was making those sins gone when David confessed and makes up as a man who otherwise honored God. Most of David's life was centered around following God. God did not close the book on him because of his failures, but he did have consequences for the things he did wrong. God did not allow him to get away with all the sins, but he also allowed him to continue serving God even amidst David's sins. Some have a hard time with David's gifted and charismatic life and do not know how to relate to him. He was just a man, And just as God did with David, he forgives our sins as well when we confess and turn away. So, the secret of David's life is the common ground we all have. When you have read Psalms 32 and 51 you will realize that David knew better than to try to hide sin. He confessed his sins and God forgave his sins. God hears us when we confess and He does the same thing and brings us back into the fold and gives you a joy for your salvation. As we meet David in the chapters of these books, we will see that he is just a man like us who wants to follow God but ends up in trouble all the time. When we fail it is not the end of our work for the Lord. Our lives are not over and God will not condemn you to misery. When we confess, God forgives. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ~ Questions ~1: Reflect on a time God gave you a second chance and thank Him for that second chance. Thank You for making it through the first chapter of the study. We have many more to do as we learn and grow a little more each day.
~ David Was Great Because of His Creativity ~David was very creative. Being both a musician and an athlete is rare. Most people end up choosing to either play music or do sports. He wrote at least seventy-three of the psalms. In all of His moods he wrote the psalms and started the hymnody for the nation of Israel. When you get into David's psalms, you learn that most of them are written because of something going on in his life. One thing as he talks about the wonders of God's world, we think sitting out under the stars that David sat down under the same stars and pondered creation. Psalm 8. He wrote a lot with his moods. Like artists often live he lived an up and down life. His moods were down and up all the time and he wrote those moods out in his artist brain. I have always wondered if he was bipolar. He wrote through those dark times. ~ David Was Great Because of the Choice of His Life ~God chose David to be king over Israel. David did not do anything to get to be king. He was just a teenage boy and did not work to be anointed as king. Scripture confirms Gods work in his life
You have five verbs, which is five action words. God went out to get David and bring him in to where he would be king. David had the Spirit of the Lord come upon him as he was anointed. Saul lost that Spirit when David gained it. 1 Samuel 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So, Samuel arose and went to Ramah. We have seen God's hand at work for all accounts of David's life as we study we will see that he was a blessed man even in all the turmoil of His life, God protected him and ultimately he became king of Israel. ~ Questions ~1: How did God view David's sin? 2: How does God view our sins? Thank you for joining me for the next part of the first chapter. Tomorrow we start the next chapter and we will be doing great to learn more about what our lives can be like when we confess and get forgiveness, and what NOT to do in our lives too.
~ David Was Great Because of His Charisma ~ We see three types of Charisma in David's life, physical, personal, and national. ~ David Was a Man of Physical Charisma ~This charisma is not what they call it now days. It is not a modern word meaning but a meaning of the way someone lives. David was small when he started out, but his charisma gave him the opportunity to follow God. He seemed to be short, he could not fit in Sauls armor. Yet, we know he was active, strong, quick. We know this because of the things he had done. He was also said to be 'glowing with health and had handsome features. He was skilled at the harp, a brave warrior and seems to be a charmer too. ~ David Was a Man of Personal Charisma ~David had talents in multiples and gifted in so many different ways. We see him as a musician, and warrior, an exile, a leader and a king. He is a great friend, and humble man and has an impulsive streak too. Most people seemed to love David. Michal, fell in love with David, she was Sauls daughter, and Jonathan was his best friend ever and Saul's son. When it was time to go to the Philistines the king was impressed with David at that time too. ~ David Was a Man of National Charisma ~ David was loved by Israel and Judah both. David focused on him as the hope for Israel. He spoke to many people. He was a working class friend to others as he was a shepherd in his youth, then he was poet, getting through to those with artistic lives. He spoke to leaders and spoke to millions as a leader and warrior. He was a great king most of his life. ~ Questions ~1. When you are around someone who seems to have it all together, do you feel you cannot relate to them? We got another great lesson started and there is so much to learn with and growing in the Lord each day. I am excited to share this with you.
~ Introduction to David ~ |
Good Monday Morning!! It is a great day to start a new study and get our lives back on track for studying again. It seems like a long time since we have had the opportunity to just sit down and get closer to God. We have always wanted to be like David in the life of coming back and holding onto God in all things. |
~ Introduction ~
We will follow all these stories and learn from Saul and David and the life they lived and destroyed. We will learn why God took Saul's life and left David alive. Psalms that David wrote we hear his pain from the evil he did, and learned how his heart broke from what he had done in his life. He had much pain in his life and a lot of it was his own doing.
We are starting a new book, 'The Tender Warrior'. It is a study on David, we have the two-study series to go through. . We love the books by Pastor Jeremiah and the lessons that are in them. It should be a great book. We support Turning Point so we get a new book or two a month. It is good for us to study and grow each month. We love getting closer to the Lord each day. |
Hello Friends, we have been in Iowa most of the spring and got home a while back. Finally settled in home. It is July 4th and we are getting ready for our "Epic" capture the flag battle. We are doing it with Highland Manor, so there will be 78 of us playing. We have four teams with flags to capture. |
See you Monday!
