~ The Prayer That Gets Results ~Genesis 32:9-12 Then Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you’: 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies. 11 Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and attack me and the mother with the children. 12 For You said, ‘I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’ ” The meeting after this prayer is one of the most heartfelt reconciliations in human history. Jacob had stolen Esau's blessing and birthright. He was now afraid of Esau. God told Jacob to go back and he was afraid, but he obeyed God. When Esau saw Jacob coming over 20 years later, he ran to meet him and show him that he was loved. They wept together and were reconciled to each other. What changed Esau in this amazing way? It was God working in the hearts of all who were involved through the prayer that Jacob prayed. Because "Prayer Changes Things". Prayer will change people and change things. A heartfelt prayer is a prayer that gets results. When Jacob brought up the prayer about God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, he is talking to God about the covenant relationship with God Himself. They had this covenant established in Genesis. Jacob himself was in the covenant with God. When we have accepted Christ into our lives then we also are in the covenant with God the new covenant of Jesus, from His hands. All true prayer reminds that we are also in a covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. He is "Our Father" when we accept Jesus. ~ The Prayer that gets Results is Scriptural ~Jacob went to God and first reminded Him that He had promised that God would be with him and keep him where ever he should go. That He was going to bring him back to the land he left. Genesis 28:15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” ~ The Prayer that gets Results is Sincere ~Jacob was sincere in his prayer to God. He says that he is not worthy of the least of the mercies and all the truth which God showed him. He did not come to God thinking he deserved to have his prayers answered, he came acknowledging that he was unworthy of the answer. God does not answer our prayers because of who we are or what we have done, He answers on the life of Jesus and who He is in us. When we have Jesus in our lives we can come before God as Jacob did and see that we are in the throne room and our prayers are covered by the blood of Christ. It has nothing to do with us. ~ The Prayer that gets Results is Specific ~You do not see Jacob praying in general, he prays specifically in his prayers. He wanted delivered from Esau and was afraid of what he was going to do. Lots of us do not see answers to our prayers because we pray in general and not specific. God wants us to request specific things from Him so that we will have answers we can see. It took one prayer of Jacob to change the heart of Esau and allow Jacob to go home. ~ The Prayer that gets Results is Selfless ~Jacob sought no glory in himself, he was turning his heart to God and praying for God's glory that He would do as He said and return Jacob to his land. Jacob longed for his brother and a reconciliation that only God could bring. He wants all this to be glorifying to God. God is willing and waiting to answer your prayers, He has a longing for us to turn to Him and pray for His desires in our lives. He always desires great things of us. We want to have our prayers answered, scripturally, sincerly, specificly, and selflessly pray them to God and find real promises in the Bible that are for us and pray those promises that God will do what is needed for our lives. Our prayers should be based on what Jesus has done and God has promised, it is not about us and the things we do or say. Pray these ways and watch God work in your life. Looking for the glory of God to shine through each prayer. God wants to answer our prayers more than we want Him too we need to go before Him and in His glory pray. ~ Code Word: Sand ~When you see a sandy beach or photo of tropical isles, remember that God made the promise that He would make Abraham's seed be more than the sands of the sea. He keeps His promises, we need to pray them. ~ Can You Memorize the Code Verse ~James 4:2b Yet you do not have because you do not ask. Thank you for joining us in our study. ~ The Prayer of Jabez ~1 Chronicle 4:9-10 Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” 10And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested. Jabez is known only for these two verses in the Bible. There are hundred of names in this part of 1 Chronicles, and yet he was singled out for two verses. The prayer he prayed was one that was honored by God and answered yes by God. Jabez wanted to be different and to stand up for and work a good work for God. His prayer is a productive prayer to widen his ministry for the Lord, He longed to work for God. Jabez was not like the other boys or his family, there was something different in him. He wanted to experience more from God and be someone strong in the work of the Lord. He prayed also to have purity: "Keep me from evil" that prayer can make a big difference in our lives too, help us to be used by God in all things. We need to put this prayer to God and then start working. ~ Jabez Teaches Us to Pray for Productivity ~In Jabez's prayer He asked "that God bless him and expand his territory" In other words he wanted more opportunities, more responsibilities, and more influences in the lives of those around him. Our territory is our place of influence in Him. Jabez was not content to just go along for God in the areas that he was living in, he wanted to do more for God and have more influence on those he came in contact with. He did not want to just be spiritually stagnant he wanted work from God even more. To enlarge his territory, we need to ask that of God too. ~ Jabez Teaches Us to Pray for Power ~In His word His hand upon us is His power in our lives. Jabez is pleading to God that He would put His hand on him and help Jabez to do good for God. His desire was that God would make him more than just a normal person, he wanted to do things for God. He needed God's hand to accomplish great things for God. God's hands can open doors for us that we cannot open, they can hold back enemies we could not deal with, they can give us the ability to do today anything that we could not do alone. We need that power from God to do the things that God wants us to do. We need to pray that prayer to God and allow Him to work in us today. ~ Jabez Teaches Us to Pray for Purity ~He finishes up his prayer with this brief petition, "Keep me from evil." He was asking God to keep Him from evil, not keep evil from him. He knew things would happen in our lives that would bring evil in our world, but we do not have to go with that, we can stand for God through it. Keeping us out of temptation. We need God to stand against the devil. He asked that he would not cause anyone pain as well. That those around him would not be hurt by something that he did. It is hard to believe that this amazing prayer is tucked away in the old testament and within our Bibles. One that could change our lives and strengthen us. We need to be studying the word of God so that we find the golden nuggets that He places in our path. The last of these two verses says "So, God granted him what he requested." ~ Code Word: Hand ~As you wash hands or pick something up with your hands, think about praying for the Lord to keep His hand of blessing on us. The were scarred with the nails of the cross so that we could spend eternity in heaven with Him. ~ Can You Memorize |
