Just telling someone about a truth is not enough, you need to engage them in the story to drive that truth into their lives. Telling a child that 2+2=4 they will learn that but they will not understand how to find that truth. If you teach them to apples and two oranges equal four fruits. They will then understand how to get to the right truth. Some of the most important ways that Jesus taught His disciples to pray was by contrasting two people, prayers, and paradoxes. We will look at that. ~ Jesus Evaluates Two People ~The first person He shared about that was going to pray was a Pharisee. They were strict about the way they should pray. They wanted to get everyone's attention. They would put on fancy garments and stroll through the crowds. Trying to be sure everyone saw them and noticed them. The second was a Tax collector, they were the most hated people for the corruption and cheating taking the taxes for those Jews who lived in the Roman area. They were despised of all people. Jesus first starts talking about the two men who were from the upper-class Pharisee to the lowest of the low tax collector. They both went to pray the revered and reviled in Jerusalem. ~ Jesus Examines Two Prayers ~how he was not like the tax collectors. He was talking to himself and not to God. He wanted the people to hear all the wonderful things about him. So they would be shocked and in awe of him. They always measured in a human way, that they are better than everyone else. Luke 18:10-12 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ In contrast you have the tax collector, The first difference is that he stood afar off and was humble and meek when coming to God. He thought he did not deserve to even lift his head to the God he was praying to. The tax collector had so much remorse that all he could do was beat his chest and cry out to God to be merciful to him. Luke 18:13-14 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” What we see now when Jesus taught this was that He looks at the heart. Those filled with self-pride cannot humble themselves to God. We need to pray from our hearts as people that are humble and repentant to God. Make our prayers mean something to us and to God. ~ Jesus Explains Two Paradoxes ~You have the Pharisee that is not humble, they will find one day that they would have done better to give God the glory that they were giving themselves in prayer. We see God take down those who allow pride to lead them through life. The tax collector on the other hand Jesus says that he who humbles himself will be exalted. He prayed from his heart and was full of remorse and repentance. The way up is by humbling yourself. Luke 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” When you are like the ax collector and messed up in your life and you are truly sorry for all you did, you can come to Jesus and repent and be forgiven for everything we have ever done. We focus on the two people, one prideful and one humble, our failures do not stop us from being loved by God when we return to Him and live humbly. You have two prayers, remember to pray with humility and praise God too. And two paradoxes, Humble yourself and God will exalt you in due time. ~ Code Word: Taxes ~When you next pay taxes or see the taxes coming out of your paycheck, remember that parable of Jesus. Follow the tax collector and remember that the way up is down. ~ Can You Memorize |
