Asia!!Bangladesh!!Compassion-assisted children experience these realities daily. But at the Compassion center, there is hope. Bangladesh speaks Bengali and has a population of over 162 million people. Issue: One of the biggest challenges in Bangladesh is food scarcity. Nearly 33% of children under the age of 5 are underweight — among the highest rates of malnutrition in the world. And schools in Bangladesh do not serve food. Response: At the centers, children receive meals five days a week. These meals are often their main source of nutrition. They also get fruit and milk once a week. Lunches usually include rice and lentils with vegetables, fish, eggs, meat or potatoes. Indonesia!!In this tropical paradise, however, many people struggle with poor nutrition, and secondary-school attendance is low. Compassion-assisted children experience these realities daily. But at the Compassion center, there is hope. Indonesia speaks Indonesian and has a population of over 267 million people. Issue: Most children in Indonesia complete primary school, though the quality of education is not always high. The attendance rate drops when children reach secondary school. Just 76% of boys and 78% of girls in Indonesia attend secondary school. Response: Education is a priority at Compassion centers. Tutoring, access to textbooks, and other educational opportunities encourage children to stay in school. And as children get older, they can explore vocational opportunities to help them become financially self-sufficient as adults. Philippines!!The Philippines speak Filipino and has a population of over 109 million people. Issue: Children in the Philippines are abused and exploited at an alarming rate. It’s hard to know exactly how many children experience violence, but we do know that millions are in need of protection. Response: Each registered child is known by a Compassion staff member who has been trained to identify warning signs of abuse. If a child is at risk, Compassion intervenes quickly to ensure that each child knows she is known, loved and protected. Sri Lanka!!Compassion-assisted children experience these realities daily. But at the Compassion center, there is hope. Sri Lanka speaks Sinhala and has a population of over 22 million people. Issue: Though only 7% of Sri Lankans live below the poverty line, people in remote areas often face many more challenges than those in urban communities. These areas often lack access to good nutrition and improved water and sanitation despite high rates of coverage nationwide. Response: Compassion centers are located in communities with the greatest need — even those in remote and hard-to-reach areas. Where basic services are often lacking, Compassion intervenes with educational opportunities, nutritional support and lessons about good hygiene and sanitation practices. Thailand!!Compassion-assisted children witness these realities daily. But at the Compassion center, there is hope. Thailand speaks Thai and has a population of over 68 million people. Issue: Poverty in Thailand is decreasing, and unemployment is less than 1%. But pockets of poverty still exist, particularly along the borders, where many children lack citizenship and have limited access to education and health care.
Response: Compassion recognizes children’s unique needs and works to meet them. For those without Thai citizenship, our holistic approach provides not only financial, material, medical and educational support but also legal support through our partnership with International Justice Mission.
